Fourth Posting

Annie was blessed with an
adventurous spirit and strong work ethic which were of great help during time
on the claim. Because Annie was born
late in her mother’s life, she spent much of her childhood with her brother’s
family and friends of his on Lookout Mountain in Georgia. During her stays on Lookout Mountain, Annie
discovered a deep love for horses, becoming an experienced horsewoman as well
as learning to shoot. She was such an
excellent shot that killing chickens for the evening meal was accomplished with
a clean shot to the head. No chasing
down frightened poultry for Annie!

Willie Peas Reese Lamb was born August 18, 1892 to Dr. William “Will” B. Reese and Annie Robertson Reese. Willie weighed a whopping twelve pounds when she was born and she was told she was the homeliest baby ever seen with cheeks so fat, one could hardly see her eyes. Her mother had a difficult time with the labor and was very ill to boot so when she saw her new daughter she said, “Take her away, that’s not my girl!” Her father, however, had fallen in love at first sight and proudly announced, “Well, she’ll always be my girl, and her name will be Willie.” And so Willie was named for her father.
